Is Health Only Physical?

The two main ingredients to produce a healthy body are often considered to be a balanced diet and physical exercise. Many athletes and people who are conscious about their health tend to keep a close eye on their food intake and often count the amount of carbohydrates, proteins and fats that their consuming. They also try to go on regular walks, jogs or attend gyms in order to have a healthy heart and reduce the chances of cholesterol and increased heart pressure. It is a proven fact that these practices will result in physical well being but it is not necessary that these will lead to mental or emotional well-being, which is just as important.

Medical News Today describes being healthy as, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” When we think of the word, ‘healthy’ the first thing that comes to mind is physical well-being and that is a huge mistake on our part. Taking care of yourself by doing simple activities that you enjoy such as reading, cooking, singing are essentials in life without which you cannot develop a healthy mind.

One should try to take some time out of their busy week, be it an hour or two and do what they love. Sometimes a long shower might help you to relax your nerves, meditating and self reflecting about life may provide you with the insight that you really needed and sometimes hanging out with friends and family may turn out to be exactly what you need in order to feel better after a bad day.

In the same way, one visits the doctor when they get physically sick, one should also make an effort to visit a counselor when they feel that their mental stability is at risk. Mental illnesses are just as serious and they may also affect your physical health. They make life unbearable, and surviving each day becomes a huge burden to carry.

The biggest priority in life is to be content and that may be impossible to achieve if one is not healthy, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It is not an easy feat, but if one works hard, they may find the fulfillment that they seek.
