Living with Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a mental health condition with complexity at its peak. It’s not just about echoes of mind, familiar or strange voices to be heard, or hallucinations or delusions. It’s a disorder associated with lots of thoughts, perceptions and emotions, disconnecting a person from reality. It’s difficult to identify the exact cause of schizophrenia. Yet, it is believed that certain genetic, environmental and neurobiological factors cause this mental disorder.

For me, this mental illness is not just a clinical term; it’s an existing reality. One of the most challenging situations related to this disorder is the consistent presence of auditory hallucinations. Uh! These voices are often taunting and malicious and seem to arise from the depths of the subconscious. The voices lead to internal dialogue, which is more distressing and troublesome.

While there’s no cure for schizophrenia, treatment options are available to manage symptoms and improve quality of life. This illness can be minimized by proper usage of medicines prescribed by a consultant doctor. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) also improvise this mental condition by addressing underlying thought patterns and perceptions.

As nothing can change you unless you aim, it’s necessary to believe in the power of self-strength. If you decide to recover yourself, you will, no matter whether by taking medicines or therapies or by maximizing social interaction.

Individuals with schizophrenia need a strong support network, whether it be family, friends, or others who can understand and validate their experiences. Together, they all contribute a lot towards support. Connecting with those who also share similar difficulties might be helpful to a greater extent.

It’s our foremost responsibility to break the stereotypes and societal norms of isolating Schizophrenics for their mental disturbance. Awareness must be spread that this disorder needs proper treatment. Together, we can work forward as a nation to better serve our country in terms of better mental and physical health.
