Taskeen Public Awareness and Wellness Team’s Visit to Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral

We are excited to share the recent activities of Taskeen’s Public Awareness and Wellness team in collaboration with Aga Khan Health Services Pakistan (AKHSP). Our team visited the beautiful regions of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral from June 25th to July 3rd, 2024. The purpose of the visit was to promote mental health awareness and support and create a referral channel for people requiring mental health services in these areas, where mental health resources are often limited.

Activities Undertaken:

  1. Awareness and Shout-Out Videos:
    • The team produced a series of shout-out videos featuring influential figures from the region. These videos aim to raise awareness about mental health and actively reduce the stigma associated with mental illnesses. By leveraging the voices of respected community leaders, we hope to foster a more supportive environment for mental health conversations.
  2. Stories of Hope:
    • In addition to the shout-out videos, the team produced two “Stories of Hope” featuring lived experience survivors from the region. These powerful stories highlight personal journeys of overcoming mental health challenges, providing inspiration and hope to others.
  3. Training at Basic Health Centres (BHCs):
    • We visited six BHCs operated by AKHSP in Madaklasht, Lon, Kosht, Phunder, Danyor, and Skardu. The focus was on training Lady Health Visitors (LHVs) to better identify patients who may require mental health support.
    • The training sessions covered the basics of mental health, recognizing signs and symptoms of mental illnesses, and the importance of early intervention.
  4. Creating Referral Channels:
    • One of the key outcomes of the visit was the establishment of a referral system. LHVs are now equipped to refer patients in need of specialized mental health services to Taskeen, ensuring they receive appropriate care and support.

This partnership between Taskeen Health Initiative and Aga Khan Health Services Pakistan marks a significant step towards improving mental health services in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral. By empowering local health workers and raising awareness, we aim to build a supportive network for mental health in the region.
