The Dr. Guislain Award ‘Breaking the Chains of Stigma’ is an initiative of Museum Dr. Guislain and Janssen Research & Development, LLC, uniting two institutes that have a longstanding involvement and heritage in the field of mental health care and research.
This award is aimed at social and/or cultural initiatives that deal with mental healthcare in a scientific, clear and dynamic way.
Initiatives that promote the creativity of those suffering from mental illness, including the prevention of social exclusion by questioning the boundary between normal and abnormal behavior in its social context.
This concerns initiatives which emphasize the dignity of sufferers in a passionate, creative and innovative way.
13 individuals and organizations are shortlisted for the nominees 2020 Dr. Guislain Award.
Taskeen as a pioneer in mental health education in Pakistan, working actively for stigma reduction was nominated for its campaigns and efforts to reduce stigma related to mental health in Pakistan
An independent selection committee will review the shortlisted nominations and select the recipient, who will receive $50,000 to further their work related to fighting stigma associated with mental illnesses.
On October 10 2012 Bagus Utomo was the first to receive the Award, which refers to Dr. Joseph Guislain (1797-1860), the first Belgian psychiatrist and pioneer in the treatment of people with mental illness.
